Welcome Letter
2007

2007 has truly brought on a new cast of characters ready to go and anxious to show their skills. After graduating thirteen outstanding seniors we have a lot of rebuilding to do and are on our way. Our captains this season include Samantha Gifford, Caitlyn Lancaster, and Melissa Hancock. they have been working hard to get our team in shape and organized for this season. Courtney Veinotte and Zara Saydjari have gone to the Division I ranks at the University of Maine and the University of Michigan and report they are being successful and having a wonderful time. Becca Roy, Lindsey Pinkham, and Whitney Damon are playing at the University of Maine at Farmington and Stonehill College. They will all continue their field hockey careers and pursue their academic goals. This summer Becca, Courtney, and Zara competed at the East-West game beating the West 6-0. Becca received the MVP honor.

Our coaching staff has stayed in tack with Jane Bigelow returning to assist the freshman with Lauren Stevens and Norma Hurlbutt. Tammie Veinotte is our primary defensive coach and Fawn Haynie our keeper coach and head JV coach. Brandi Merry and Pam Burns will remain our middle school coaches. The strength of our program is this capable, devoted staff who work unselfishly when ever they are needed.

Our off season was full of activities for the players who chose to participate. The Futures Program which build terrific stick work included about twenty players. Courtney Veinotte and Zara Saydjari were chosen for the National U-19 tournament, and Kylie Damon and Megan Hancock were chosen for the U-16. Many players were chosen for select travel teams. The Katahdin team includes Caitlyn Lancaster, Kylie Damon, Melissa, Megan, Mallory, and Makayla Hancock. Zara Saydjari and Courtney Veinotte played on the Cape Ann select team. A new team headed by our own Andrea Devoe Thebarge, the Maine Stix, chose Erin Sevey, Mallory, Megan, and Makayla Hancock, Jasmine Garseau, Liz Noddin, and Morgan Hisler. Becky Pratt and Renee Despres play for the Maine Event Super Sophs. We had wonderful attendance during the winter at Waterville All Pro and in the spring in the Sukee program. Special thanks go out to Jeff Corson who continues to volunteer to coach our Waterville and Sukee teams. The kids love him and he allows them to have fun and develop their skills at the local level. His teams were very successful once again winning all their games at Sukee. Andrea also provided a skills camp in March at the Skowhegan Recreation Department.

In June we traveled to Colby for the Maine State Games. One of the high school teams won the silver medal and the "little girls" won the gold in their division. This was a wonderful team building experience. The team would like to thank all the parents and boosters for their support of this event.

Step Up Camp brought out the best in everybody. It always amazes me just how much kids can improve in just four days. Thanks go to the Recreation Department for their commitment to our program and willingness to go the extra mile for our kids. Thanks also go to Tammie Veinotte and Fawn Haynie for their outstanding coaching and Caitlyn Lancaster, Samantha Gifford, and Melissa Hancock for their volunteer coaching. This camp is our biggest team building event of the year and consistently improves. Brandy Merry also ran the summer junior program for the recreation department and had a lot of fun introducing the little girls to our game.

Team camp at Bentley College proved that we can play among the best. Caitlyn Lancaster was chosen Player of the Week. The U-19 group won the 11 v 11 tournament. Makayla Hancock and Lorri Hiltz received coaches awards. Caitlyn Lancaster, Melissa Hancock, and Megan Hancock were chosen for the all star team, and Sam Gray was chosen as keeper of the week. The kids reported that they learned so much and found it the best camp they had ever attended.

In closing, I wish to sincerely thank all the parents and community members that support our program. Special thanks go to the boosters, Mr. Michaud, Bob Arris, and the Recreation Department. You are always there for us and are the reason we make greater strides every year. Although nothing is perfect, we are committed to provide a program where any girl can find success, build their self-esteem, learn self-discipline, and most importantly.. have fun and build friendships. Don't forget to check out our Skowhegan Field Hockey web page.

Always,

Paula
